Overhead pressing is the cornerstone of shoulder development — but the choice between barbell, dumbbell, machine, seated, and standing variations has real implications for muscle recruitment, injury risk, and long-term progress. The Muscles of the Shoulder

The deltoid has three heads: anterior (front), medial (side), and posterior (rear). Most pressing movements predominantly train the anterior deltoid, with varying contributions from the medial head. Standing Barbell Overhead Press

Pros: Allows the heaviest loads, recruits the core as a stabiliser, develops functional pressing strength that carries over to athletic movements, most efficient for building raw shoulder strength.
Cons: Technically demanding, requires shoulder mobility, lower back stress from stabilising under load, difficult for some body proportions.
Best for: Building maximum shoulder strength, general strength athletes, anyone who can perform it pain-free.

Seated Dumbbell Press

Pros: Greater range of motion than barbell (dumbbells can travel lower), identifies and corrects left-right imbalances, more shoulder-friendly for many people due to freer arm path, easier to learn.

Arnold Press

A dumbbell press with rotation from a neutral/supinated grip at the bottom to a pronated grip at the top. This rotation adds range of motion and greater anterior deltoid recruitment through a longer arc. How do I grow my side delts (medial head)?

The medial deltoid responds best to lateral raise variations — dumbbell lateral raises, cable lateral raises, and machine lateral raises. Why does my shoulder click or pop when pressing?
