What Is Flexibility?
Flexibility is the passive range of motion of a joint or muscle — how far a muscle can be stretched by an external force (like gravity or someone pulling your arm). It is measured in a relaxed state and does not necessarily translate to movement quality.
What Is Mobility?
Mobility is the active range of motion you can control — the range through which you can produce force, maintain stability, and move with intention. A mobile lifter can squat to depth with a neutral spine. A flexible lifter might be able to touch their toes but cannot produce force in that position. Mobility is flexibility plus strength through that range.
Why Mobility Matters More for Strength Training
When you squat, deadlift, or press, you need to be able to access the required range of motion while under load. Passive flexibility without active control is actually a risk factor for injury in loaded movements — the joint can reach a position where the surrounding muscles cannot protect it. This is why dynamic warm-ups (which develop active range) are superior to static stretching before training.
Key Areas to Develop for Strength Training
Hip Mobility
Essential for squats and deadlifts. Limited hip mobility is a common cause of butt wink, forward lean, and hip pain. Work: 90/90 stretches, hip circles, deep squat holds, and pigeon pose with active loading.
Ankle Dorsiflexion
Limited ankle mobility causes heels to rise during squats and reduces depth. Work: ankle circles, banded ankle mobilisations, calf stretching, and deep squat practice.
Thoracic Spine Mobility
Stiff thoracic spine causes forward rounding in upper back and limits overhead mobility for the overhead press. Work: thoracic rotations, foam roller extensions, and cat-cow variations.
Shoulder External Rotation
Needed for the overhead press, back squat bar position, and bench press setup. Work: band pull-aparts, sleeper stretches, and wall slides.
How to Programme Mobility Work
3–5 minutes of targeted mobility before training as part of your warm-up. An additional 10–15 minutes of dedicated mobility work 2–3 times per week, ideally on rest days. Consistency over weeks produces results that single long sessions cannot.

Will stretching make me weaker?
Prolonged static stretching (30+ seconds per muscle) immediately before training acutely reduces force production. Use dynamic mobility work before training. Save longer static holds for after sessions or on rest days.
How long does it take to improve mobility?
Noticeable improvements typically come within 4–8 weeks of consistent daily practice. Significant mobility gains — enough to change movement patterns — take 3–6 months. Consistency of practice matters more than session length.
Do I need to do yoga for mobility?
No. Yoga is one path to improved mobility but not the only one. Targeted mobility drills specific to your training demands are more efficient. Yoga is a valid and enjoyable option if you like it, but not a requirement.
